US Special Operations Command has awarded Boeing a $194 million contract modification for seven additional MH-47G Chinook helicopters, the Defense Department said.

The $194,224,723 delivery order change under contract W91215-16-G-0001 is for six refurbished and one new-build MH-47G rotary-wing aircraft, it was announced Wednesday, June 12.

"This action is necessary to maintain the rotary-wing heavy attack aircraft of the US Special Operations Forces (SOF) and to mitigate the impact of the availability of the MH-47G aircraft in light of increased SOF operational requirements," the statement said.
The contract was previously amended to add four additional MH-47G Block II helicopters with an estimated completion date of June 29, 2020.
In November, Boeing received a $42 million contract modification for four new Chinooks for the command due to an "urgent need."
The MH-47G is the special operations variant of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook heavy multirole helicopter used by the US Army's Special Operations Command.

It is used in heavy cargo missions such as the transport of troops, weapons, vehicles and other equipment, as well as in civil and humanitarian aid missions. It can perform long range missions at low level and in adverse weather conditions day and night.
The helicopter is armed with two M134 7.62 mm electrically powered air-cooled machine guns and two M240 7.62 mm belt-mounted machine guns mounted on either side of the fuselage.
The US military has about 70 Special Operations Chinooks, and the Special Operations Forces operate 36 MH-47D and MH-47E aircraft that are being upgraded to the G variant. The MH-47 model is not exported, but Boeing is also developing a Block II configuration for the CH-47F variant.
Saudi Arabia intends to buy eight CH-47 helicopters from Boeing under a $26 million contract modification announced in May 2018. In April 2018, the US State Department approved the possible sale of 17 CH-47F Chinooks to Spain for $1.3 billion with unique modifications. In October, the US State Department approved the sale of 36 extended-range H-47 variants to the United Kingdom worth $3.5 billion.

The MH-47 Chinook and its "E", "D" and "G" variants are the primary heavy transport helicopters for the US Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The MH-47 differs from its CH-47 sister model in that it includes combat systems designed to make the helicopter more durable on missions deep into enemy territory and during low-level night flight.
The MH-47 also has in-flight refueling capability for long-range insertion. The helicopter can be used to deploy parachutes, rapidly deploy ropes, and submerge special operations forces. In 1995, Boeing completed delivery of one MH-47E prototype and 25 production aircraft to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Ky. This fleet operated all over the world and carried out combat missions in all climates and conditions. The aircraft excelled in high-altitude operations in combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The MH-47G builds on the capabilities of the MH-47E with the addition of a CAAS cockpit and improved aircraft survivability equipment. With the growth of the Chinook fleet, the 160th SOAR will add a Chinook battalion and expand its operational capabilities.
The MH-47G's fully integrated digital common aviation system (CAAS) enables global communication and navigation. CAAS is one of the US military's most advanced helicopter systems. CAAS includes integrated infrared (FLIR) and multimode radar for ground and low-level flight in extremely low visibility and adverse weather conditions. Today's MH-47Gs feature a fully integrated digital cockpit management system, long-range fuel tanks and advanced cargo handling capabilities that complement the aircraft's mission performance and handling characteristics.

The MH-47G combines many of the proven Chinook systems and features. Among them, the fuel tanks that have twice the capacity of the CH-47F and the in-flight refueling system stand out. The MH-47Gs are again produced on the joint MH-47G/CH-47F production line. The Chinook has been in service with the US military since 1962, and the current CH-47F/MH-47G modernization programs, which include a combination of reworked and new aircraft, will ensure that this tandem rotor helicopter remains in the military fleet at least until the 2030s. . It is possible that Chinooks will be an Air Force asset for a century or more.
