FORT BELVOER, Va. (News Service, July 27, 2009) -- The patient- and family-centered design of the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is taking physical shape after a year of construction.

In the year Under the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005, the new hospital will replace DeWitt Community Hospital and take over some services provided by Walter Reed Medical Center. The current Walter Reed facility is slated to close on September 15, 2011, as a new hospital expansion opens in Bethesda.

Belvoir's 1.3 million square foot Joint Military Hospital includes 120 single patient rooms and numerous facilities designed to provide control and comfort to patients and their families.

"Everything that goes into the hospital is designed to improve patient outcomes," said Col. Charles Callahan, commander of the DeWitt Community Hospital and Healthcare Network.

Callahan said the new hospital will continue the national movement for patient-family-centered care. At Fort Belvoir, patients and families control the room environment and adjust temperature, lighting and other services from the patient's bedside.

"It's redesigning every process in the hospital around the patient and their family and their care needs and wants," Callahan said.

The seven-level hospital includes an intensive care unit, an inpatient behavioral health unit, a cancer center, an emergency center, operating rooms and diagnostic centers.

The hospital uses evidence-based healthcare design to create a therapeutic, family-friendly and efficient space. It also integrates research-based architecture that improves patient outcomes, Callahan said.

The hospital is divided into five nature-themed rooms — River, Eagle, Sun, Oak and Meadow — that spread out like a finger, letting natural sunlight into every patient room, Callahan said.

Callahan said half of the rooms face east and half face west, ensuring morning or afternoon sunlight shines through the patient's windows.

In addition to the different color schemes throughout the hospital, kiosks and parking garages will also feature maps and directional intercoms that will allow patients to notify doctors of their arrival, said Lt. "It's laid out in a very simple way, so patients can navigate the building without any help from staff," Walker said.

"Those are just some of the features that this building offers to make patients feel comfortable and confident that they're getting the best care possible here," Walker said.

As the state's first joint military hospital, the facility serves active duty service members, retirees and their families, Callahan said.

Bringing together the unique cultures of the various military branches was a key focus in the hospital's planning. Callahan said they are creating a new culture, a culture of excellence.

"By creating a culture of excellence, we hope to bring together the diverse service cultures that have characterized preventive health care facilities for decades," Callahan said. The BRAC program, an $807 million community health facility, was part of a Department of Defense initiative to improve the quality of care provided to our military, retirees and their families in the National Capital Region.

New Belvoir Hospital To Help Replace Walter Reed

The design of this state-of-the-art facility includes a seven-story, 722,835 SF hospital, two clinics and administrative space. The 275,528 SF South D&E Clinic has 152 exam rooms. The 276,850 SF North Clinic A & B has 193 exam rooms. The 120-bed hospital includes a 10-bed intensive care unit, a 10-bed behavioral health inpatient unit, a cancer center, 30 emergency rooms, a pharmacy, an operating room with 10 operating rooms, diagnostic centers and more. The new facility was built and constructed under an integrated design-bid-build contract. Expected to open within a year, the Fort Belvoir National Intrepid Center of Extension, or NICOE satellite, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda will expand NICOE facilities to service members in the field.
