The MH-47 Chinook and its "E," "D" and "G" variants are the primary heavy-lift transport helicopters for the United States Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The MH-47 differs from its CH-47 sibling in that it incorporates combat systems designed to make the helicopter more survivable during operations deep in hostile territory and during low-level night flights.

The MH-47 is capable of in-flight refueling for long-range deployments. The helicopter can be used for parachute deployment, rapid rope deployment and water deployment of special operations forces. In 1995, Boeing completed delivery of a single MH-47E prototype and 25 production aircraft to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky. . The aircraft excelled in high-altitude operations during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The MH-47G builds on the capabilities of the MH-47E with the addition of a CAAS cockpit and advanced flight survivability equipment. With the growth of the Chinook fleet, the 160th SOAR will add to the Chinook fleet and expand its operational capabilities.

The MH-47G's fully integrated digital Common Aircraft Architecture System (CAAS) allows for global communications and navigation. CAAS is one of the most advanced US military helicopter systems. CAAS includes an integrated forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and multimedia radar. Today's MH-47Gs have a fully integrated digital cockpit management system, long-range fuel tanks and advanced cargo handling capabilities that complement the aircraft's operational performance and handling characteristics.
The MH-47G incorporates many of the proven Chinook systems and features. These include significant fuel tanks and an in-flight refueling system that provides twice the capacity of the CH-47F. MH-47Gs are rebuilt on the normal MH-47G/CH-47F production line. The Chinook has been in US military service since 1962, and the current CH-47F/MH- 47G modernization programs, which include a mix of rebuilds and new aircraft, ensure that this tandem rotor helicopter will remain in the military fleet at least. 2030s. . Chinooks could be military aviation assets for a century or more.

With New Ch 47 Variant Back In Flight Tests, Boeing Hopes For Production Contract
The US Special Operations Command has awarded Boeing a $194 million contract modification for seven additional MH-47G Chinook helicopters, the Defense Department said.
A $194,224,723 cost and fixed-fee type delivery order change was awarded Wednesday, June 12, to contract W91215-16-G-0001 for six new-build and one new-build MH-47G rotary-wing aircraft. He said
"This move is necessary to maintain U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) heavy attack, rotary-wing aircraft and minimize the impact of acquiring the MH-47G aircraft in light of increased SOF mission demands," the statement said.
Earlier, the contract was modified to include four additional MH-47G Block II helicopters with an estimated completion date of June 29, 2020.

In November, Boeing was awarded a $42 million contract for four new Chinooks due to an "urgent need."
The MH-47G is a special operations variant of Boeing's CH-47 Chinook multi-role, heavy-lift helicopter used by the United States Army Special Operations Aviation Command.
It is used in heavy lifting operations such as transportation of troops, weapons, vehicles and other equipment and in civil and humanitarian relief operations. Long-range operations can be carried out during the day and at night in low-level and adverse weather conditions.
The helicopter is armed with two M134 7.62mm electrically powered, air-cooled miniguns and two M240 7.62mm belt-mounted machine guns mounted on either side of the fuselage.
U.s. Special Operations Command Orders Additional Mh 47g Chinook Helicopters
The US military has about 70 special operations Chinooks, and special operations forces operate 36 MH-47D and MH-47E aircraft that will be upgraded to the G variant. The MH-47 model was not exported, but Boeing is developing a Block II configuration for the CH-47F variant.
Saudi Arabia is set to buy eight CH-47 helicopters from Boeing under a $26 million contract amendment announced in May 2018. In April 2018, the US State Department approved a $1.3 billion sale of 17 CH-47F Chinooks to Spain. Typical modifications. The US State Department approved a $3.5 billion sale of 36 H-47 extended-range variants to the UK in October.
