Changes to the CH-53E also include a stronger gearbox and a fuselage stretched 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in). The main rotor blades have been replaced with titanium-glass fiber composite.

The tail configuration has also changed. Testing of the YCH-53E showed it could lift 17.8 tons (up to 50 ft (15 m) wheel height) and, without external load, could reach 170 knots (310 km/h) at 56,000 lb gross weight. This resulted in two pre-production aircraft and one static test article being ordered. The CH-53E base model serves both the US Navy and the Marine Corps in the heavy lift role.
