M60 Fire Rate - In the late morning hours of July 1, 1970, five 82mm mortar rounds hit the Rapcord Fire Support Base in North Vietnam. This was followed by small arms fire and RPGs. In defense of the base perimeter, Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Airborne Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, engaged North Vietnamese Army forces about 700 yards away.
Thus began the 23-day battle of Ripcord, one of the last major battles between American and North Vietnamese forces, which ended when American forces were ordered to withdraw.
